Tuesday, February 9th, 2010

Looming over the southbound lanes of Interstate 35 in Wyoming, Minn., is a grinning portrait of former President George W. Bush, asking “Miss me yet?”

At a time when President Obama’s approval ratings are cratering, the billboard appeared stealthily about a month ago.

“It was put up by a group of small business owners — who want to stay anonymous –because they felt Washington wasn’t listening,” said Mary McNamara, a spokeswoman for the company that owns the billboard. “They felt like it was a good way to get their message out.”

For the past two days, images of the billboard have raged virally across the Internet, with a Google search resulting in more than 100 million hits Tuesday.

Monday, August 24th, 2009

A half hour into a Southwest flight, a man exposed himself to a female passenger. “Her scream apparently upset him, and he ended up punching her.”

Flight attendants and other passengers (then) wrestled with the 300-pound man, who flailed at flight attendants and broke away, stripped naked and was lying in the plane’s aisle as it made a return trip to Oakland to remove the man. The man was taken into custody without incident.

Wipe that grin off your face!

Wednesday, May 27th, 2009

Stopping driver’s license fraud is no laughing matter: Four states — including Indiana — are ordering people to wipe the grins off their faces in their license photos.

“Neutral facial expressions” are required at departments of motor vehicles (DMVs) in Arkansas, Indiana, Nevada and Virginia. That means you can’t smile, or smile very much. Other states may follow.

The serious poses are urged by DMVs that have installed high-tech software that compares a new license photo with others that have already been shot. When a new photo seems to match an existing one, the software sends alarms that someone may be trying to assume another driver’s identity.

Man racks up almost $2 million in fines

Thursday, October 2nd, 2008

SAO PAULO (Reuters) – Transport authorities in Brazil have caught up with a speed-loving Brazilian driver who clocked up nearly $2 million in fines, local media reported.

Police intercepted the driver of a 12-year-old car in Sao Paulo at the spot he most frequently committed infractions, the O Globo daily said on Thursday.

For seven years he had been speeding and running red lights but was not arrested earlier because he never registered the car in his own name.

The paper said the car, worth around $6,500, would be auctioned if the driver, unnamed, did not pay the $1.8 million in fines in 90 days.

A Cyprus court jailed Pakistani national Fazal Ur Rehman for eight months for forgery after police spotted spelling mistakes on stamps on an Afghan passport he was carrying — otherwise it was a near-perfect copy, the Cyprus Mail said Wednesday.
